Our journey began when our founders were building legal access tooling at international institutions. We took sophisticated tech for granted at the Harvard library, but in India, legal professionals were stuck with keyword queries on interfaces resembling a 1999 Yahoo dashboard. Inspired by GPT-2, we saw an opportunity to build an AI-first legal platform exclusively for the Indian jurist.
jhana was born in 2022, and we've been building since.
AI represents a seismic shift, like the locomotive looking back at the cart, like building 5G towers before upgrading 2G towers. Our mission is to democratize both the access to and the value generated by AI, safely distributing this technological moment to millions. We commit to keeping a version of jhana perennially free and to tending to bias and alignment in our technology.
Excellent legal counsel might remain a privilege, but we want to make excellent legal information, strategy, and research broadly available.
Legal systems arose to facilitate the rights and relationships of principals, but centuries of abuse have led to a Kafkaesque procedural. The performance of legal process has become the end in itself, and rote work and needles in haystacks abound.
We aim to denoise the parts of their work that technology can help with, allowing lawyers to focus on strategic intelligence and decision. We wish to make legal practice more realized for lawyer and client.
